Art Therapy Research: Assessing Communication and Emotional Regulation

This article describes an art therapy research project approved by the Institute of Education, University of London and I am delighted to be published by Taylor & Francis in the International Journal of Art Therapy.

My research investigates the impact of art therapy with an autistic person and learning disabilities.

In this art therapy research paper, I show that Art Therapy can assist with the development of communication abilities and emotional regulation strategies.

It is is significant because of an urgent need to provide effective treatments to help autistic people with learning disabilities, and complex needs.

They may not always respond to cognitive therapies and frequently they can spend long periods in NHS mental health in-patient services. There is also a risk when community placements break down, there are factors such as PTSD.

So it is thus important to evaluate approaches that can support psychological well-being and cater to sensory needs. There has been a lack of research into this area, and I do feel that art therapists have a lot of insights to share in this area.

The study uses multiple research methods, including video analysis, interviews, and arts-based narrative research, which adds to the research base and provides a framework for further research.

It follows the principles of action-based research, promoting effective practices, including the participant’s voice, and follows clear ethical guidelines from the University of London.

The research findings highlight important conclusions and more art therapy research with autistic people with learning disabilities is warranted,
