Art Therapy for Children and Young People

Introduction

Mindscape provides a structured programme of art therapy for children and young people. This can take place at our private therapy space or at a school. An initial evaluation will take place with programme objectives detailed. Followed by a final summary and recommendations for parents/ carers.

Art Therapy with Children

For children, creative approaches and art-making can be a more natural way for them to express and communicate how they feel. As often feelings can be communicated through metaphors in art and play. This can help a child to express and to regulate their emotions in a healthier way.

Benefits of Art Therapy for Children

Art Therapy aids the development of healthy attachments to others. This can prevent negative behaviour as the child learns coping strategies to deal with challenging situations. Such as transitioning to a new school and improving social relationships with their peers.

Suitable referrals to art therapy might be those who are experiencing emotional and behavioural difficulties or may appear withdrawn. These problems often impair their learning and adversely affect their relationships in school. So an approach emphasising their strengths will help to build resilience, self-esteem, and confidence.

Sometimes children that have a high degree of cognitive and academic skills need some help with socio-emotional skills and communication with peers. Which can thus enhance creative thinking, leadership, and problem-solving skills.

Benefits for Adolescents

Adolescents can have difficulty communicating as it is a time of great change where they are developing their own personality and sense of self.

Art Therapy can provide a safer environment to express emotions and allow them space to learn, developing their creativity and sense of self. Giving them the tools to regulate their emotions and manage their behaviour.

Suitability for art therapy can include:

  • Children who find it difficult to communicate their emotions and worries through words
  • Able to attend weekly sessions at the same time every week
  • Exhibiting emotional outbursts and behavioural difficulties
  • Struggling with anxiety and emotional difficulties that affect their day-to-day living
  • Having difficulties with peer relationships at school
  • Family and relationships problems may be causing distress
  • Increased isolation and withdrawal
  • Difficulties in sleeping
  • Impaired functioning at school
  • Strong reactions to life changes, parental separation
