Sometimes children and young people find it difficult to put their feelings and experiences into words. Creativity, art-making and play can offer other ways to communicate, explore emotions and make sense of experiences that may feel confusing or overwhelming.
At Mindscape Therapy & Consultancy, Andrew Wright offers creative and integrative psychotherapy for children and young people, adapting his approach to each individual’s age, developmental stage, interests and needs. Providing an experienced Creative Therapy & Therapeutic Play service in Bournemouth
With over 20 years of experience across education, mental health, foster care and therapeutic practice, Andrew provides a supportive space where children and young people can explore their experiences, develop emotional understanding and build strategies for managing difficult feelings.
How Creativity and Play Can Help
Play and creative activities can provide opportunities for children to express themselves in ways that feel natural to them. Drawing, painting, working with materials and imaginative play may help children explore feelings and experiences that are difficult to communicate verbally.
Within a therapeutic relationship, these approaches can support:
- Emotional expression: finding different ways to communicate feelings, worries and experiences.
- Emotional regulation: developing greater awareness of emotions and ways to manage difficult feelings.
- Self-awareness and confidence: exploring thoughts, relationships and personal experiences.
- Communication and relationships: developing understanding of themselves and others.
- Processing difficult experiences: exploring challenging feelings and experiences at a pace that feels manageable.
The emphasis is not on artistic ability or producing a finished piece of work. Creative activities are used to support exploration, communication and emotional understanding, according to the needs of the individual child.
The Importance of Imagination in Therapy
Imagination plays an important role in how children make sense of themselves and the world around them. Through imaginative play, storytelling, drawing and creative exploration, children can develop ideas, express feelings and explore experiences that may be difficult to communicate directly.
Imagination provides a space where thoughts, feelings and experiences can be represented through images, symbols, stories and play. A child might use a character, create an imaginary world or make an image that reflects something important to them, even when they cannot yet explain it in words.
Within therapy, these imaginative processes can offer opportunities to explore emotions, relationships, worries and experiences in ways that feel manageable for the child. Rather than needing to discuss difficult experiences directly, children can approach them indirectly through creative expression, at their own pace and within a supportive therapeutic relationship.
Imagination can also support flexibility in thinking, curiosity and the development of new perspectives. Through creative exploration, children may begin to consider different possibilities, develop a greater understanding of their feelings and discover alternative ways of responding to challenges.
At Mindscape Therapy & Consultancy, imagination is valued as part of each child’s individual way of communicating and making meaning. Creative and therapeutic approaches can help nurture this capacity, supporting emotional understanding, self-awareness and wellbeing.
A Creative and Individual Therapeutic Approach
Every child is different. Some children find talking helpful, while others may communicate more easily through art, play or imaginative activities. Creative and verbal approaches can be combined according to the child’s needs and the therapeutic aims of the work.
As an HCPC-registered Art Psychotherapist, Andrew integrates creative approaches and therapeutic play techniques into his practice where appropriate. This can provide children and young people with different ways to explore their experiences, develop self-awareness and make sense of their feelings within a supportive therapeutic relationship.
The work is guided by the child’s needs and develops at their own pace. Where appropriate, parents, carers and other professionals may also be involved to help support the child’s emotional wellbeing.
