Supporting children and young people with their emotional wellbeing
Looking for a child therapist in Bournemouth and Poole? Andrew Wright offers individual therapeutic support for children and young people who may be experiencing emotional, behavioural, or social difficulties.
Children do not always find it easy to explain how they feel. Anxiety, anger, low mood, difficulties at school, changes within the family and challenges associated with autism or ADHD can affect how a child experiences everyday life.
With over 20 years of experience across education, mental health, foster care and therapeutic practice, Andrew provides a supportive space where children and young people can explore their feelings, develop emotional understanding and build strategies to manage difficult experiences.
How therapy can help
Therapeutic support may be helpful for children and young people experiencing:
- Anxiety, worries and emotional distress
- Anger, frustration and difficulties with emotional regulation
- Challenges associated with autism, ADHD and other neurodivergent experiences
- Low confidence, friendship difficulties or school-related challenges
- Family changes, attachment difficulties or experiences of trauma
- Difficulties expressing feelings or communicating their needs
A creative and individual approach
Every child is different. Children and young people may not always have the words to describe their experiences, particularly when feelings are confusing, overwhelming or difficult to understand. Creative approaches can offer another way to communicate, explore experiences and make sense of feelings.
As an HCPC-registered Art Psychotherapist, Andrew integrates creative and verbal psychotherapy approaches according to each child’s age, interests, communication style and individual needs. Art-making, play and other creative activities can provide opportunities to express feelings, explore experiences and develop a greater understanding of themselves and others.
Creative therapeutic work can also support emotional regulation, self-awareness, confidence and resilience. Rather than relying solely on talking, children can explore experiences through images, materials, symbols and play, at a pace that feels manageable for them.
The therapeutic relationship provides a safe and supportive space in which difficult feelings and experiences can be explored and understood. Where appropriate, Andrew works collaboratively with parents, families and other professionals to support the child’s emotional wellbeing.
Assessment and therapeutic support
Sessions begin with an initial consultation and assessment to explore the child’s needs, the difficulties they are experiencing and whether the service is appropriate. This provides an opportunity to discuss the concerns that have brought the family to therapy and consider a suitable approach.
Therapeutic work is individualised and may focus on developing emotional understanding, strengthening coping strategies, improving communication and helping the child make sense of difficult experiences. The approach remains responsive to the child’s needs and develops as their understanding and confidence grow.
